I have the planning bug really bad so ... I'm trying to find some ground covers that would work really well in my hot hot hot very sunny very tiny back yard. I have 2 locations which are really bugging me. One is a tiny strip about 6 inches wide and 18 inches long against the fence. I grew great weeds there last year - I would like to encorporate things that would fit in a rose/cottage garden and was thinking of thyme or prostrate rosemary? The other location is against the white stucco of my townhouse with the step and patio on 2 other sides then it gets wider into my octagonal 3ft raised bed - where I plan to put peppers and some herbs... I would like something tall and really eyecatching but not wild - last year I had Love Lies Bleeding in that spot [8 inches x 24 inches] and it was spectacular but way too big. Any thoughts?

Hey Fern, for the groundcover, I had the same type of small, baked area and I planted Dianthus 'Arctic Fire' in it. Any Dianthus would probably do, but I liked the flat, tight-knit foliage and bright flowers of Arctic Fire.

For the other place, just find something sun-loving that grows straight up. Lilies and glads come to mind. I had a narrow area in hot sun where I grew Shasta Daisies and Gaillardia 'Torchlight'. Torchlight is similar to 'Goblin' but the flower stems are much taller.

I love perennials that bloom the first year ;0)
