Cuttings are my next plan. I have a wandering jew type plant (is there a more PC name for it? The one i learned was tradescantia, but now that seems to mean an outdoor spider-something plant) - anyway, i'm going to take a bunch of cuttings of that, of my coleus, ivy, alternanthera, plecanthrus (quilty guy with green on top of its leaf, purple on the bottom - is that right?) and that red shield hibiscus that i asked about once. Maybe some geraniums, but i'm not sure.

Laurie, i'm not sure about the begonia but so many things root unexpectedly easily that you should just try.

Thanks for that link Doris! I just bought a rex begonia a couple of weeks ago, so I may try the leaf propagation with it some time. But apparently the angel's wing type can just go into a glass of water. Love it! That's my type of propagation.....easy! ;^)

I brought cuttings in of some coleus, but just recently they up and died on me. I think it was spider mites.....nasty little things! But I do have what I think is a coleus with very red stems and leaves, with a bit of burgundy on the leaves. I think it had "blood" in the name, but it rooted up nicely in water too, so I'll have to get more of it going as well.

How many more days til spring in that count down was it? I feel like a kid on a LONG car ride, "are we there yet?" LOL

An angel wing is a fibrous rooted begonia and cuttings should survive fine. It won't like much direct sun and will not like being put outdoors until a decent size and fully rooted (not this year).

There's a huge difference between full sun exposure indoors in winter compared to summer and and equally big difference between indoor and outdoor intensity of sun.

I'm actually quite amazed at how low of light levels the angel's wing will tolerate. Since Dec 1, it's been down in the basement about 8 feet away from a window. It sure hasn't bloomed and it's a bit leggy, but it's very much alive and kicking. I love plants that can handle my neglect so well! ;^)

Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' (6)

Not cuttings but thanks to Shauna, I potted up (4) Alstroemeria Princess Lilies® 'Sara' rhizome divisions as well today.

Akita's a pretty one Sharon!! I've never tried cuttings from dahlias before. Which method are you trying?

Thanks Laurie, I love this Dahlia too.

First you have to get the mother tuber to produce sprouts ;) then I took about a 3" cutting (cut below a node), rub some rooting hormone on the end, use a dribbler or your forefinger to open the soil, then stick the cutting into a 4" square with Sunshine #4 mix.

Then they're placed on top of the heat mat, high top dome and under the fluorescent lights.

I do this for all my cuttings.

Have you been successful with dahlia cuttings before? I wonder how long the baby dahlia would have to grow for before you could successfully bring the tuber in for the winter? I know I've taken cuttings from tuberous begonias before and they did well all summer, but come fall there wasn't a tuber to speak of to bring in and dry.

Laurie, is this actually a dragon wing begonia you are referring to? I think angel wing begonia is a cane type begonia which is usally a house plant. I grow these and they are very easy to root in just water. Debbie.

Thanks for pointing that out to me Debbie. I googled pictures of each type and found out that mine is the dragon's wing. I got it from a plant swap and knew it had "wing" somewhere in the name. I put some cuttings in water a week ago and there are already some roots coming, so it's looking very promising.

Laurie, this is the first time ever for Dahlia stem cuttings for me, I could never get a tuber to last the winter before, now that I have, I'll keep you updated if they produce good size tubers this fall ;)
