They did have some beautiful begonias...but I pried my little fingers off them and slowly, begrudgingly walked away.haha!

Today I picked up 7 own root roses from Walmart. 3 morden sunrise, 3 winnepeg parks and 1 Aidelaide Hoodless. They had some others that I want, but I'm not sure how much room I have in my front window to baby these until they are ready to plant out. It may be simpler for the rest to wait a couple weeks and then plant them straight away.
I think I need to take a trip to Costco to see what I might like! I have no touble finding everything I want at Costco - in fact I even met my husband there!

I don't think that I had mentioned on this thread that I had picked up a mandevilla vine 'Red Velvet' from the Greenspot for $3.99. Also from the Greenspot I picked up $1.50 plugs of:

-Large leaf (can't remember the Latin name for it)
-2 annual vinca vines (was able to split them into 4 individual plants)
-Bacopa (was able to root 3 cuttings, so now have 4 individual plants too)
-Potato vine (one green, one purple)
-Another yellow leafed vine, I think it's a lychnis, or something like that? That's the downside to plugs, you don't get a tag with it, but the price makes up for it.

Also at the Neepawa Hort day, I picked up Heuchera 'Amethyst Myst' and Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost'. The euphorbia is supposed to be excellent for hot, dry conditions, so it should do well for a sunny container.

The SDB iris was labeled mix....but this one was blooming. It is yellow and different from the yellow that I already have. It also has the most beautiful fragrance.

Wow, Laurie, $3.99 for a Mandevilla is fantastic. I also picked up a 'Red Velvet' on Sunday from Parkland in Red Deer (road trip) but I paid $9.99 for it. I thought I was getting a deal because they are about $15 wherever else i have seen them.

I picked up 2 Priscilla® petunias and managed to take 24 cuttings off of them. Certainly the much more economical way of getting a flat of those types of plants.

Shauna these mandevillas were only in 2" pots, but I'm sure once they get potted into something larger the price will go up. Brenda did some research on them and found out that they are supposed to be easy to take cuttings from. That's always a good thing.;^)

Sorry, I can't help you. I have over 30 different irises that have yellow of some sort in it. But none of them matched perfectly with yours. The beard was the wrong color or mine was more of a gold or had no edge of white around the falls.

My Baby Blessed I think is the closest to your iris. Although, it does not have the white markings down the side of the falls like yours does but it in the same shade of yellow yours is.

Shauna, some time when you're making a road trip to Red Deer, you'll have to stop in for a cup of coffee, and give me a lesson on petunia cuttings. (I did my first geranium cuttings this year, with help from my neighbor, but I think she starts her petunias from seed (and since I ended up with a 0% germination on my 2 packets of wave petunia seed, I think I'd rather try taking some slips.)

Shelley, when all of those lilies start blooming, you're going to be the talk of the neighborhood! As for my Landinis, one does have some growth coming on it. The other one may have a little bit coming, but it's hard to tell yet. I'm patiently waiting for signs of life from all the lilies that I planted last year. Most of the ones that I've had for awhile have shoots coming, just the newbies are the slow pokes.

Just got back from my annual around-this-time-of-year trip to Thunder Bay, and i was remarkably restrained! Part of the reason was that there were going to be four of us coming back and room would be at a premium - and it was!

I bought a hanging basket in a light sage-y green, two yellow nemesias that i couldn't find here last year, a yellow iris rhizome (can't remember the name right now) and some seeds. That's it! :) Gale gave me a kind of rice grass, a castor bean and a container of plants she says are called "Jewels of Opar". We had a good time visiting the nurseries, but there were not a lot of enticing blooms in either one. Funny how some years are light that.

But i'm all hepped up to get to our local nurseries and clean them out of callibroacha! LOL

I've never grown Jewels of Opar, I'm going to have to try some from seed if you collect some this fall Marcia ;)

I really don't need much to buy this year, everything I've got so far has been ordered thru mail orders, saved from last year or I have started from seed. I'll probably wait till Mothers Day and pick up a Fuchsia basket and I'm thinking of buying a Weeping Birch, will see ;)

Oops had to come back and add more stuff. I had Monday off for a chagne and thought the nurseries would be less busy, as the weekedn had neared 75F and yards are being worked all over! Boy was I wrong! Well, I left with honeysuckle vine for out front, clematis and lupine for a new bed, and alot of creeping phlox and mother of thyme for a rock garden boulevard. Also new lattice to build a "fence" and lots of landscape timbers to surround the new beds up the entry way

Marcia, you mention not a lot of enticing blooms in the nurseries.

I'm the opposite. I'm always looking for plants this time of year not in bloom and not about to bloom. What entices me are good strong plants that will bloom when they usually do in our area and not coaxed into early bloom in the greenhouse they were grown in.

I understand, Greenstar, but you must be stronger than me! :) I'm a real sucker for blooming flowers.

Yesterday i received begonia tubers from Vesey's and today the rest of the order came:

I found my Persain Shield.

And I picked up 4 of Lysimachia congestiflora to put into pots. I thought the colour would be nice mixed in with wave petunias.

I also picked up a Rock Star iris and a Summer Wine Ninebark.

Shelley, have you grown that Lysimachia in full sun before? I picked up a plug of it, so of course I didn't get a tag with it. I thought it would be more of a shade plant, but maybe it'd do better in sun?

Laurie the tag on the Lysimachia says full to part sun. It'll grow 10-12" tall with a 12" spread.
I haven't grown it before. I'm hoping that it tolerates frost.

Got more stuff - I planted my Vesey's order last week - 4 hardy phlox, 3 Monte Negro Asiatic lilies, 4 mixed hosta, 2 Black Barlow aquilegia, 2 Virginia blue bells, 4 mixed ferns. I had ordered with one of their $25 off coupons. On our nice rainy Friday I drove to a local nursery, and got my first Alstroemeria - Anouska - for $8.99, an apple mint, Beacon Silver lamium, and a few annuals. On Saturday we headed for Red Deer. Innisfail Co-op had little perennials in really nice shape - 5 for $12 - so I bought 2 gypsophilia repens "rosea", Rotgold helenium,
Sherwood Purple creeping phlox, and Sunray coreopsis. At Parkland Nurseries, I spent my $50 gift certificate from my aunt, and bought Prince of Wales juniper, Emerald cedar, and Royal Burgundy berberis. I also picked up Morden Bell rose, which I've really wanted, for Mother's Day. I had a great plant weekend. Our PFRA tree order came last week, so yesterday we planted 26 sea buckthorn, 25 villosa lilacs, 25 green ash, and 10 acute willow cuttings. Spring is really, finally here!

Today i recieved my Botanus order. I planted the two Dianthus 'Firewitch' near my little pond and added the Alyssum 'Basket of Gold' to the same area. I potted up the two ligularia and planted the free Stella D'Oro daylily - had to move a couple of heuchera to do it, but i wanted to move them anyway. I got some Madame de Paris glads but haven't planted them yet because i need to add a bit of soil to the area where they'll go.

Marcia, you'll love 'Firewitch', I bought one last year and it has spread quite a bit.

Today I went plant shopping,

first I checked out our new Wal-Mart in town, oh my, somebody is not looking after the plants. All their annuals were either frost bitten or dry, dry, dry, it was so pitiful that I walked out disgusted.

I love that, Sharon. Those would look phenomenal in my herb pot. But I think I'll be sticking with 'Priscilla'. They did so well last year in the front planter and I want some in there and then the herb pot filled with them, to tie things together at the front. I've got 24 very healthy cuttings done and they want to flower so bad already but I'm not letting them. Nope, they need to get more roots first. I think I'm going to do the purple, yellow and orange theme again.

I bought a Passiflora 'Lady Margaret' and a Hibiscus 'Luna Red' a couple of days ago. I'm really looking forward to the Passion flower blooming. It's got 17 flower buds on it already and it's about 2' high. This year, they will get no iron chelate, though, no matter if they get chlorotic or not. Just slow release.

DH bought me an early Mothers Day gift today -- a Morden Belle (Parkland Series) Rose Bush. I already know where it's going to go! He did good hey? Considering he bought it all by himself! 8^)

Plus I did a favour for a friend earlier this week and she brought me a flat of all sorts of annuals -- Geraniums, Verbena 'Burgundy', Nemesia 'Sunsatia Banana', Licorice plant, Silver Nettle Vine, and Argyranthemum 'Vanilla Butterfly'. I was totally floored and not expecting that at all --- but they are awesome! 8^)

I've been working for the past couple weeks for a friend who just had a baby so I haven't had much time for browsing the nurseries but once she comes back I'll hopefully find some good deals (OK, yeah, less choices probably though -- LOL) I can't believe it's already 'planting out weekend' already next weekend. Time has sure flown!

Anyway, my mother's day present was 3 hours alone, 3 nurseries, and buying for the new walkway flower beds. Ok that's not all I bought, but still..

Huechera, some pretty purple trailing clover, tatting fern and interrupted fern for one of the north beds.

Creeping thyme and blue falx for the "boulevard" rock garden.

Peppers and a couple extra tomato plants I didn't start from seed for the veggie garden.

Oh yeah, the reason for shopping: several lupine and columbine and 2 cranesbill geranium for the walkway beds.

I have also acquired in the last couple weeks lots of summery bulbs- acidanthera, tritelia, etc, several different lilies and glads, two comtesse something or other clematis, a honeysuckle vine, a new trellis for the clematis- well you all get the idea!

My oldest DS and I went for our grad haircuts on Wednesday, and I picked up a Winnipeg Parks rose and a dwarf Alberta spruce - it's really cute. For my Mother's Day treat, I stopped at a Home Hardware and picked up wooly thyme (finally - I've been searching for ages) and a couple more lamium. I also grabbed a red mum, an iris whose name escapes me, meadow sweet, and a purple-leaved plant at our little local green house - Jim always has a really nice selection of perennials. I think it's time to quit - unless I get to go someplace else and check stuff out of course!

Yesterday, at a yard sale, I picked up heuchera Pulchella and L.O. lily 'Queen's Promise'. Then went to a greenhouse and picked up hosta 'Revolution' and Torenia 'Golden Moon', which is a very striking yellow flower with a purple throat and the back of the flower is purple as well. Here's a link to a picture of it, but it's much more striking in person. I just love it! Does anyone know how well torenia does in the house for the winter? And can you take cuttings?

if you google 'torenia cutting' there is a lot of people who take cuttings and also keep it over winter as a houseplant. I wonder if you would want to put it under your lights though? What pretty colors it has and very eye catching!

Heuchera pulchella is apparently an extremely small heuchera but hardy to zone 3. I would love to see it in person.

I just picked up a gallon size Iris ensata 'Royal Banner' Japanese Iris at Extra Foods for $4.94!
I'm so happy about this find as I have never grown this kind of Iris before. I'll probably grow it in a pot and overwinter it down in the pumphouse for the winter.

I'm still waiting for their other pots of perennials/ shrubs to go down next week. There's a cutleaf golden cut-leaf Elder reduced down to $13, but I'm going to wait to see if it goes down some more ;)

Well, I went back to Extra Foods today and thank goodness I did, there was only one Sambucus racemosa ÂSutherland Golden Cutleaf Elder left, so I bought it instead of waiting for next week.

Last week I went shopping at Lindenberg's. In store they are clearing out their perennials at 40% off.

So, I bought...

Supreme Sultan TB iris... $2.39 regularly $3.99.

American Halo, Fair Maiden, Sleeping Beauty and Sea Lotus Leaf Hostas all $3.29 each instead of $5.49.

First Frost, Summer Breeze and Great Arrival Hostas all $5.09 instead of $8.49.

Monarch's Velvet Potentilla followed me home also for $2.99 instead of $4.99.

I also picked up some Japanese peonies for $10.19 instead of $16.99. I bought Kukenu Jishia, Bride's Dream and Glowing Candles.

The herbacious peonies I bought were Springfield, Eden's Perfume, Kansas, Laura Desert, Tom Eckhart, Pink Cameo and Edulis Superba. They were reg $6.99 and I paid $4.19.

Daylilies...I will plant and hope that they are true...if not then I may just have to give them away or sell really cheap. I bought Black Stockings, Fire and Fog and Moroccan Sunrise all regularly $7.99 and now on for $4.79. The daylilies that were regularly $5.99 and on for $3.59 that I picked up were Edge of Darkness, Cherry Valentine, Canadian Border Patrol, Paige Pinata and Daring Deception.

Each year I go and get stuff at their clearance sale. Sure is a lot cheaper. They are bare root so I just plant them up immediately and they do fine.

Thank goodness perennials can grow in a pot until I have time to plant them. I have done some cleaning through the beds and found a few spaces already and the rest are going to be placed in my new walking garden where the old holding garden used to be.

Well DH added two more roses to the list this year...A J.P. Grootendorst and a George Vancouver. :o) Apparently DH really likes roses, and wants to have more...who am I to complain?? Peavy Mart has most of their plants on at 1/2 off, and the roses are $10 for the 2gal. ones and $8 something for the 1gal. so I and then they gave me some other discount that ended up knocking off an additional $8, so I basically got the 1gal Grootendorst for free!! :o)
