If its full of quack grass, your best approach is to dig all the plants right out of the bed, Spring time is a good time to divide overgrown perennials anyways. RoundUp the area, you might even have to give a second application making sure every blade of grass and weed is killed. You can use plastic grocery bags or nursery pots to store your perennials for the time being.

Usually it takes about 2 weeks to noticed the effects of the RoundUp and it should be safe to transplant back all your perennials back by then. Mulch, mulch, mulch around the plants which will help tremendously with weeds.

Or if you want, you can carefully spot RoundUp around the plants, but make sure you do this on a wind-less day ;)

One thing though with RoundUp, the weather needs to be around 20C to work effectively.

I agree with Sharon, I find it much easier to lift anything that is good and then roundup. It is much easier to reshape beds and add compost ect, without worrying about burying plants or overspray. And you can never have enough mulch. Cheryl
