It will be interesting to see how they do, but they might be out of control by the time breakup is complete--a tangled mess of vines and roots. Save some in the dark and cold to use as seed potatoes in a month or so.

Which variety of potato did you grow?

I also have potatoes in my cold storage.

One variety is an early one that I only plant a few of. This one, the Norland, is sprouting like crazy. These red potatoes are also soft already. This variety is the one we like in the summer and it is ready first.

Viking Potatoes are better winter keepers. They are also red potatoes with a shallow eye. We love these ones and the majority of the potatoes we plant will be this one. They are just putting out a bit of a sprout now but are still very firm and will be great yet for a long time.

I also agree, that unless you want a mess of roots and the inability to untangle them, do not put a light down in the potato bin.

So if they have long sprouts as mine do , Do you just bunch them up and put them in the hole when planting,Or cut them completely off , Or half off ,??

For potatoes with long sprouts, leave the sprouts on, and in the spring, just dig a long trench laying them in there with a bit of the sprout showing on the top of the soil, when you cover the trench. I wouldn't cut them all off or even half off. Just lay them all in there in a row, placing the sprouts along in the trench.
