Again, it is an interesting point Cindy. My seeds were from a seedhead that was on the end of a failed cutting attempt from one of my mom's clematis last year. I'm not sure if my seeds are viable but they were certainly large (not quite as big as a pencil eraser and flat) and seemed full so I thought I would try them. Also, the flower was finished when I took the cutting.

Anyway I'm not a good candidate for your study because it is either Nelly Moser or Jackmanii and neither are a tails-off type. So let's wish each other luck and I will report any sprouts.

Apparently I was supposed to take the tails off of 'Abundance'. Oh well. It seems it's supposed to have a lengthy warm, then cool period as well. If I get sprouts it'll be a miracle, or maybe I'll get lucky with some beginner's luck ;o)

Gil, those are big seeds! I remember mine being pretty teeny, which is why it was so hard to give them little haircuts, lol. Be interesting to see if you get sprouts - good luck!

Laurie, you should still have a good chance of seeing sprouts. My understanding is that by removing the tails on certain ones you speed up and increase your germination. Apparently they'll still germinate with the tails on, it'll just take longer. So, did you WS or indoor sow them? Maybe you should just throw the container outside in an out of the way spot and hang on to it for a while. Might take a warm summer followed by the cold winter to break dormancy. Or maybe you'll have beginner's luck like you said and they'll sprout in time for this year! Good luck, keep us posted.

Cindy, they were WSed, so I probably will hang on to them through the summer and maybe stick them in the fridge for 6 weeks. I'm thinking that I may have more success just trying to root the cuttings though. Nothing like a good experiment, right??

Well just to be clear, the seeds were not quite as big as a pencil eraser, I just couldn't think of anything that size. :0)
