Debbie, I would take the huts off just for some air flow. You could leave the straw for a little longer, but I'd hate to see your roses go moldy. Most of my roses should have thawed out from under the snow by Monday. They're calling for +22C for then, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that to happen.

You can uncover them now. It's a good idea really, as you don't want them to sit in wet straw, attracting mold. I uncovered my tender roses in Edmonton two weeks ago.

I did some uncovering of some of my border line roses today, looks like the own-root Bucks made it another year!

I should be able to uncover some of mine tomorrow. I checked tonight and the boxes are still frozen but it's supposed to go to 17° tomorrow. I see green on Miss Sunrise and Delicata, and i was trying to check Hawkeye Bell but she bit me! :>

Hi Laurie, will a little mold on the stems kill the rose? A few of my stems have a bit of mold on them.

Gladzoe, I don't think a little mold on the stems will hurt them much. I'd be more concerned if the main stem was molding at the base. Last year I had a bit of mold on some of the roses after I uncovered them, but they seemed to be fine after awhile.

The main stem looks fine. I sprayed a little garden sulfur mixed with water on the mold to see if that will make it go away. They are nice and green where I had them mounded up with soil and leaves, so I hope they get a head start.

To avoid mold I wait until the plant has gone dormant before covering in the fall. Usually mid-November.

I uncovered my roses two days ago, things are looking good! We have no frost in the forecast this week (believe it when I see it) but at least that means we won't likely get any really cold nights.

It's always interesting to see what else got covered up with the roses, I have some snapdragons that are still green and look like they're putting on new growth! :0) I guess that means the Oriental lilies should be ok too.
