Today we were in town with some time to kill before dh's doctor's appointment, so i convinced him that he needed to go to the hardware store that has an attached nursery. I snuck a peek in the back door of the nursery and there were people working inside. Could i come in? Sure i could!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my.....! They had flowers blooming in there - million bells, petunias, snapdragons, some kind of yellow daisy. They had all kinds of containers planted, roses leafing out, and perennials perking up! One of the girls showed me a green echinacea that's new to them, and the heuchera 'Silver Scrolls', which i have already. It was warm and humid and you could just smell the dirt.

Funny. Dh knew just where to look for me! :)

I know!!!! The only time I ever care to go to a hardware store is in spring/summer!! DH always knows where to find me!!!

I haven't had my spring fix yet, AND I'M DYING HERE!!!! I'm so sick of ash grey/brown. I can't even go to my garden since it's at the bottom of a hill and there's MUD everywhere.

    Lucky you!!! :)

Marcia was that echinacea called Green Envy? I saw a picture of that one in one of the latest gardening magazines(Canadian Gardening maybe?), and thought it was a "must have".

I bet there are a lot of gardeners hanging out at the local nursersies now just breathing it all in, hoping that spring may actually come after all....sigh.

That's the one, Laurie. I've ordered "Sunset" from somewhere and am hoping that it will bloom as long as "Sunrise" did. I wonder if "Green Envy" would.

There's only one way to find out! :>

Hmmm, I wonder if 'Green Envy' will make it out here to the local nurseries or not? I'm sure it won't be a cheap plant if it does.....will have to start saving my pennies.;^)

Marcia, it's not really a "nursery fix" unless you buy something :)

The nice thing about nurseries this time of year is that no matter what the weather you can pretend it's spring. I usually head to our local nursery right about now because they have "plugs" for sale (for those who aren't familiar, they are basically just rooted cuttings of plants growing in either a small cube of soil or a florist foam type material. You take them home, pot them up and let them grow big.) The nice thing is that in past years their selection has ranged from basket stuffer plants to some perennials like lamium.

'Green Envy' echinacea will likely be pretty expensive, at least for a couple of years until there's more supply on the market. I recall wanting 'razzmatazz' but the only one left at the nursery was a display one and it wasn't for sale (at least I don't think it was for sale). Then I mail ordered one from Dominion but it died right after planting. Oh well, guess it's not meant to be.

I really liked 'double decker/doppelganger' and it was available from seed one year after it came out. I ordered from some obscure USA seed source. I was a bit skeptical, but most seedlings did come true from seed. I know ones like Razzmatazz, however, must be tissue cultured or root divisions to come true to the parent plant.

    Glen,

Which nursery in Winnipeg sells plugs? I am coming into Winnipeg next Friday and maybe....

Our Hort. Society ordered plugs from Schreimers and the president is going in tomorrow to pick them up. Egads - i have NO idea where i'll put them!!

Glen, i had already gotten that bodybag rose from Walmart on Monday. :) I don't even think the nursery i went to was set up to sell anything yet. "Green Envy" was in an eight-inch container, so i would imagine it will be going for $8-$10 at least. Maybe more. We get a one-time 10% discount at this place (for being members of the Hort. Society), so i may use the discount to get a bit off the echinacea. Hard to say.

Savona, i need a greenhouse in the worst way.....

The plugs were actually picked up yesterday. Brenda, i don't know if you went in to Schreimer's, but we were pretty disappointed. The quality is okay, but the plugs were removed from the trays and put in little plastic bags! I'm not sure how the two who picked them up did it, but they had to bring all those plugs home in those little bags! Fortunately, all of them seem to be okay.

I never got there for the planting because i had to go to town in the morning, but picked up my share and have been planting all afternoon and into this evening. What would have possessed me to order 24 white lobelia?? And 8 of three kinds of wave petunia - i like petunias, but i'm not Sharon! LOL (Just kidding, Sharon!) And i'm reasonably sure i didn't order 12 tomato plants, but you never know.

I planted all the white waves into hanging baskets already, and gave my daughter one basket with a pink tidal wave petunia in it - i need to find another basket so she can have two matching, right? Now some of you say your Botanus orders will be shipped soon... How fast do you think dh can build a greenhouse? LOL (I'm really questioning my sanity here!)

When i get my greenhouse, i'll be ready to surf on those waves! :)

I went off to the nursery today, but they couldn't let people in because they had just fumigated. I got a bale of Pro-mix and some trays to hold the round 3in. pots. They were outside so I could get them, today at least. He told me to come back, that they would have lots of plugs for me to choose from. :-)

"Com'on girl, just 8 of each, you want a wave not a splash ;)"

    Thanks for the laugh ladies!!!!
