For heaven's sake don't put sand down. It's useless.

You can rake the plugs and put them into your composter, or leave them there to decompose on their own.

Afterwards, put down compost + zeolite in a 1/2 inch thick layer. Overseed if you want, rake it in and water thoroughly.

Where do you buy Zeolite? And is it too early to overseed, considering below zero temps are still forecast?

My lawn in the back is sod that was laid in the fall. The front yard hasn't been cared for in years, so there is a fair bit of moss growing in patches (I have been raking and thatching and its helping for sure) and it is a bit yellow.

What sort of fertilizer do you recommend, or do you think just compost is the way to go?

You can buy Zeolite at Sunnyside, Golden Acre, Greengate and Spruce It Up. I'm sure there's other places. Big box places don't sell it because it's a local product. Ask someone there how much you should purchase for the size of your lawn.

I wouldn't bother to overseed until the weekend. If you want to do it now it's okay though. The cold weather won't do anything detrimental.

I'd lay down compost for sure. You can also use a liquid based fertilizer if you want to, but I wouldn't do that until at the start of May at the earliest.

Also, that might not be moss. Due to our heavy snow cover this year, snow mould is everywhere. Just let your lawn dry out and it'll go away on its own.

It is moss for sure, the reason I know is because it has been there for two summers. When we de-thatch the yard (ie. rake it with the very fine-toothed rake) alot of the moss comes off. The yard was untended for several years, so the moss is likely a symptom of neglect.
