Best bet is to shoot me an email (above). Any fig can be planted in the ground but most recommend keeping them in pots the first season or two until it is strong enough to handle the winter (with protection). I have both in-ground and potted figs - the potted ones start growing and producing faster than the in-ground one's. Depending on your local conditions, this might be a better option.

Hi folks, my daughter is interested in figs too...we live in Parma OH and I found this thread with a search...Is it ok if I email also...my grandmother grew them right in the ground, in Cleveland, and I brought one from her house but being a stupid granddaughter, I let it die and now of course, 30 years later I am kicking myself!

I went to get a brown turkey fig from a Long Island nursery, but came out with a atreano fig variety. The gardener somehow convinced me that it was a better tasting fig (I never tried). I don't know if I should regret my purchase.
Is it true that brown turkey is more successful at self-pollination and also more cold tolerant? I'm hoping to plant this outside. Also, does anyone know if I can keep pruning the plant during growing season to keep a atreano fig at say 8ft if I keep it in a pot? Right now it's about 4 ft with 4 branches and some healthy leaves. I just bought it so I don't know how old the plant is. I'm a novice at this fruit tree planting. Any answer to the above or comments are appreciated

Figuring --- many have reported Atreano as an excellent fig. A search on this forum for Atreano would confirm your good choice.

Almost anything beats a BT for flavor.

Keep Atreano, get rid of the brown Turkish!!!!! Atreano is very good tasting, BT is not good at all to me, you and your gardener made a VERY good choice in my opinion. Keep in the pot but make sure it gets alot of sun!! Ciao

Anyway, any comments on how big of pot I need to keep this atreano fig going? I guess any plant like lots of peat moss.... Pruning advice? (I want to keep the plant small---I think I'll have room in my house to keep it over the winter) Does it need a cold few wks?
I have a VERY small yard in Long Island, NY (Zone 6 supposedly) with very "critical" neighbors who won't want to see a mound of blue tarp w/ a white paint bucket essentially in their backyard ---very little partition between yards.

I would not recommend transplanting a flowering or fruiting tree. The shock of transplant may hurt the fruit due to stress. Wait until the end of growing season. The plant will be going dormant and the stress will not be a factor.
