Favourite groundcovers

As a part of my townhouse garden project this summer, I am going to attack an area of dying lawn between two sidewalks. The area is between the sidewalks to my neighbours and my front doors. The exposure is to the north with maybe 3-4 hours of sunlight each day. The width of the bed would be 4 feet with the length between 6 and 10 feet depending how ambitious I feel. Currently I have had success just at the edge of the steps with Ferns, lamium and lily of the valley. Because of the fact that the area gets some foot traffic, I was thinking of putting some stepping stones and alot of groundcovers [low semi steppables]. I'm thinking that the shadiness may mean that Thyme wouldn't work but I would like something like that - my neighbour has given me free reign as has the maintenance man. Does anyone have suggestions on nice looking groundcovers that would provide some nice colour? This area will be a sidewalk width away from my xeriscaping shrub/perennial project.

Thanks for any and all suggestions

Fern
