I'm just curious what others experiences have been with using a capillary watering mat.

I was going to be away for about 1 1/2 weeks in March and knew I couldn't expect my non gardening DH to handle watering the plants I had under the grow lights as they needed constant attention. At that time I only had plants I was growing from cuttings and all my geraniums. I held off starting anything from seed until I returned. Anyway, the mat worked so well I continued to use it when I came home. It really freed me from being a slave to watering.

So in April when I was away again, I set up another mat for all my seedlings. I was really expecting to see all kinds of fungal problems develop, but nothing happened. Everything is fine and progressing nicely.

In fact I still have many of those plants on the mats, though only because I can't move them out of the house because of the weather. The only problem I can see is that some of the plants sent roots right into the mat and hence got broken off when I moved them.

So what do you think? Is this a good idea, or was I just lucky. I never intended to leave them on there for so long, but they seemed happy.
