I'm a happy camper, finally I have one sprout of
Campsis radicans Trumpet Vine after trying for the second year. Now to get it growing to a good size to plant out.

Just noticed yesterday after all the wonderful rain we had over the last few days, the Penstemon confertus has finally sprouted!

Yes, my Aquilegia flabellata finally showed up a couple of weeks ago. Cool!

But oh, the guilt I feel for some of my wintersowing that has not been planted yet. It has literally rained at least once every 24 hours for the past 3 weeks. Horrible.

My winter sowing was pretty disappointing this year. What i thought were sprouts turned out to be weeds in a lot of containers.

I still have some to plant out as well but haven't gotten to it for the same reason as Gil - that and the mosquitoes are horrible! >:( I did put a few things in a holding bed, but i think they drowned! The cactus Laurie sent me is still in that bed and loving it - it's probably sucking up water to store for that hot dry summer we're supposed to have!

I found this morning when I was watering that my wintersown Johnny Jump Ups, 3 of them have open blooms on them. They are tiny but still! Plus the purple coneflower I started for my best friend she said there are buds on it! And a couple of my carnations are budding too.
The only containers (out of 40) not to sprout are my Aquilegia William Guiness, and the Siberian Iris only had 1 out of 20 seeds to germinate. But I've been reading on that Iris's are hard to start from seed, so 1 is pretty good.

Marcia, glad to hear that your cactus is doing well! My wintersowing wasn't the best this year. I did get a few dianthus going however, but there must have been a mouse in the garden shed, because when I did notice a few seedlings pop up, the next day they were gone. The few containers that I had on the deck didn't end up being a salad bar for a mouse thankfully. But I guess I'll have to build a bigger mouse trap for the garden shed if I do more w/sing in there for next year.;^)

Laurie, i guess you didn't have covers on your containers. Maybe that would have kept the mouse out! I had some lettuce in the mini-greenhouse and something demolished that. It also ate some of the WSed adenophora seedlings that i had potted up for the plant sale. Not sure what it was, but it likes its salad! LOL

Prickly Poppy (unless its a weed, still too early to tell)and the Trollius has finally sprouted. I'm really glad to see the Trollius.

If the poppy is indeed a prickly poppy, then I had everything come up. Some did better than others, but I'm a very happy newbie WSer :)

Marcia, I had the containers in this "greenhouse" thing, but when it got warm, I opened up the door so that the seedlings didn't cook. I guess the mouse took this as an open invitation.:(

They're the bulk food bins from Safeway. I happened to be there one day when a guy was filling them up and he was asking anybody who walked by if we wanted to take some, as they just get thrown out anyway. I only picked up 2 at the time, not even knowing what I would use them for. But when I figured out that I could fit 6 small nursery containers in it, I thought it would be great for w/sing. And last winter they did work great, because we didn't have a mouse problem then......time to get a cat I suppose.;^)

Ah! I know the containers, and now i see the lid stuck up there. We don't shop at Safeway much anymore (since IGA opened in Dryden), but i might just look into getting some of those containers myself. I wonder if you could drill a few vent holes in the lid and then keep it down. You'd have to water these containers individually, though, eh?

Yes, you'd have to water the containers individually. But the opening is big enough to stick your hand in, so I just fill up a small cup with water and I can reach to the back no problem. I did melt small holes along the top, but I wasn't sure if that would be enough ventilation or not on the hotter days. I just figured I'd be able to open up the lid when it got that hot.
