Overwintering potted trees/shrubs

Hello all!
It's beautiful weather this weekend in Saskatoon - super excited to start getting down and doing some gardening.

Just wondering what people around these parts typically do with potted shrubs / plants that won't survive the winters. Bringing them indoors is obviously not an option; so how do you provide that somewhat milder but still cold winter for these plants?

I was thinking about things like potted Japanese maples, or even potted bamboos for a balcony garden, which would die in the -30C. Do people have garages that are slightly warmer?
