Too late to root prune in NY?

Here in NY I have three trees planted in 1/2 55 gal. plastic drums with taplas Pine bark/Turface/GraniGrit/Perlite mixture.

This will be their 4th season and I was planning on root pruning. They have been kept in a completely dark garage but today when I went to get them they have started to leaf out, albeit pale leaves.

I know root rpuning should be done when dormant but since they have started leafing out should I wait until they drop leaves in the fall?
