Perhaps you might wish to make the branches into seperate trees and plant them about one foot apart. Here is how they do cuttings in Greece:

If you plant the cuttings near to the original stem, you will have four or five seperate pants, all sending out branches. It will become a fig thicket!

But for bushy fig trees, just prune them a lot. cut the top to the desired height and maintain that height. Cu the tips off of each existing branch, and the branch will send forth several new little branches. It'll take a full year, maybe two, but you'll get the look you desire.

Budbackeast, are any cuts made into the bark of the limb that you are trying to air layer with the can? Is the bottom of the can packed with sphagnum?? When in the season do you do this?

Don't make cuts when air layering figs. I did an air layer last yr w wet spag against limb the wet potting mix around that and wrapped w Syran wrap tied off at top and bottom. Then wrapped tin foil around Syran so roots don't get burned. Took about 6 wks if I recall. After a few real hot days the roots really exploded. I already started a couple for this yr because the plants are too tall w/o branching, but you may want to start when warm weather is in in your area, of that I'm not sure. Great way to shorten a whip though.
