Gil, it grows similarly to Hansa, i'm finding. It's about 3 feet high now and has spread a bit since it was planted a few years ago. I would leave it on its own rather than put it in a bed.

Thanks Marcia. I suspected it might get big. I'll either make it its own spot or leave it a lot of room in a bed. I have a new one I'm trying to fill up - for a change!

I have Marie Bugnet (white as well) and it's staying quite small.

You've had Hybrid Teas, haven't you, Gil? My daughter gave me one for Mother's Day. It had no tags except to say that it was a Hybrid Tea and she knew it probably wouldn't be hardy, but it was the nicest one she could find. :) How did you protect yours? I'd like to plant it out somewhere and have it last a couple of years, maybe.

Yeah I have some HTs. They used to do really well at my old house but they're iffy here. The soil is fast draining and a little on the lean side here and I don't think they like it as much as the clay.

Anyway what I do is plant the bud union deeeep, even leave the bush in a bit of a trough the first summer so you can backfill the dirt in the fall. I have tried various things for winter protection but what seems to work best is covering them with leaves and then burlap. I don't get too attached to my HTs anymore, because you can have them for years and years and then you get a bad winter like we had in 2008-9 and it will wipe them out. I lost one that year that was over 20 years old. Those that survived didn't do much last summer either because we had no sun or heat. Most of my roses didn't even bloom last summer! :(

Thanks, Gil. I do have a relatively sheltered area in which to plant it, and i'll try the trench thing. I'm glad there's a possibility of it lasting for a year or two, anyway.

Maybe we had a bit more sun than you did. Most of my roses did not too badly last summer, esp. towards the end. Champlain was just covered with flowers. :)
