Last year my neighbor quite successfully grew peas in a large tub. I'm sure beans could be done the same way - both are shallow rooted but dislike having their roots disturbed so digging them up and moving them might not be a great idea. Plus then you wouldn't feel rushed to get a bed prepared.

Lettuce in a container will work just fine.

Don't transplant beans and peas, just plant them. They can handle several degrees of frost. Lettuce works great in containers but again if it's planted straight outside it doesn't mind the cold either. I used to grow mine in a cold frame which worked great but I have nowhere south facing to put it anymore.

Yeah, moving from one spot to another isn't a good idea for most veggies, barring the onion family. Direct seed the peas ASAP but next year, you can start them in flats indoors in mid to late March, harden off in a cool sunny place and transplant to the garden around the third week of April (or earlier if you use supported row covers). I sowed on March 12th this year, transplanted outside into a raised bed on Apr 3rd with two layers of Agribon on hoops. I just took off the covers today. I'm hoping to get enough peas that I don't feel bad ripping them out in mid-June and planting eggplant after. Small garden area - I have to squeeze what I can out of every growing degree day.
