That works for daylilies so I would expect it works ok for Karl as well. Use a very sharp spade and cut a pie-shaped wedge out for your friend. I can understand you not wanting to dig out the whole clump!

Just an update on my division.
Maybe I'm just feeble, but I found I couldn't penetrate the mass of roots and ended up digging up the whole clump. It popped out easily. Then I used my pruning saw and cut the clump up into sections. All the divisions seem to be doing okay.
