Saturday??? Is it coming again? We had a lot of that fall yesterday, and not all of it has yet melted.

It was snowing off and on most of the day here in north/ central Manitoba. Thankfully it melted as soon as it hit the ground. But it sure doesn't feel like gardening weather.

A day of wet snow and now some sunshine ahead. It's a good combination for the garden. By mid afternoon everything had bounced back and plants are looking forward to a sunny weekend. We had a tulip or two snap but that's out of hundreds of tulips and daffodils.

Cold and a bit of snow cover is better than cold and no snow. I looked at photos from the last 2 years and the garden is about a week behind. We still have some apple blossoms emerging whereas they were gone this day last year. Our leopards bane, sweet woodruff, erigerons and others will pop out this weekend....over a week late. We are just getting our first clematis blooms...last year by this time we had 5 varieties in bloom.

No white stuff here (Thankfully) but last night the forecast said "clearing with frost" so there I was at 9:30 p.m. covering plants while it was drizzling. I stopped and thought how ridiculous it was to be covering plants in the rain.

In the end I wake up this morning and it's still cloudy out.

Ironically this was my holiday week and I was suppose to be planting like crazy, but it's just too cool and wet. I did plant a few pots and am working on putting down white rock between my pond rocks and the lawn.

Daverdo, nice yard. In the second picture, what are the conifers in the centre of the picture? Degroot's spire cedar?

I popped my snow pictures into the gallery. The damage to trees around here was incredible. When I got to work they had way less snow on the ground, but there were some streets totally blocked by fallen limbs, and some of the students had close calls with falling branches on the way to school. I was outside by 5:45 AM knocking snow off fruit trees, which seem to be okay, but the noise from the breaking poplars - some branches 8" thick and bigger - was almost scary. Our farm has a whole new look. We're about 80 miles north and east of Calgary.

Glen, they're actually dwarf alberta spruce.

Snow wouldn't have been a big deal, wet and heavy snow on the other hand was probably worse than hail! Especially as it melts off the larger trees and comes crashing down on the garden! Lots of broken branches on trees in my 'hood. Ah well, such is life.
