My rhododendron "bloomed"! LOL

You may remember that I planted 3 "hardy" rhodies a couple of years ago as an "experiment" in Calgary. Well, they did not do so well last year. So I was going to give them one more year and if they did not do well again, then they were going to the trash can. Guess what? After all this harsh wintry weather that we had this past year, one died, and two are full of buds for new leaves! Unbelievable. But I guess they were planted in a sheltered location. Anyway, one even bloomed!!! Here it is:

Isn't this pathetic!? LOL! A couple of small blooms over this entire little thing. Anyway, I am still glad that it did survive. Now it has earned its right to be kept longer!!! LOL

BUT! This was supposed to be a Northern Hi Light.... or so it was labelled by dear CT - of course it looks NOTHING like it! YIKES!!!! Oh well, at least it bloomed.... LOL!

Ha ha ! Notice the difference when you see Zone 3 Alberta and Zone 5 BC ?

I remember the good old days when I lived in Zone 9A BC and rhodos grew there like crazy.

Rhodos like it warm in winter and they love acid soil. I've got neither of those :(

I had to do a large ph altered bed for this one. Also had it under insulated tarps over the winter. I did dip to zone 3 this winter....*pout*

On the bright side I do have bulbs looking to bloom. YAY!!

Ostrich, I image you must find it rather discouraging to have come from a warmer climate to one being so very challenging. I've lived here all my life and have a bit of zone envy! I'd love to be able to grow gorgeous climbing roses and rhododendrons without the need for protection. Summer is sooo short, winter sooooooo long :(

Terrance, when I lived in zone 5, I thought that it was so difficult for plants, as many of the lovelies that would do well in zone 6 or 7 just would not do well in my area! I thought it was rough.... then after moving here, I thought that it was TROPICAL where I was before! ROTFLOL! Suddenly, EVERYTHING is at risk of dying here. Even those things which have been established may still have sudden death over winter. Oh well! I guess it is what it is, so I just have to learn to make a nice backyard with what I have!!! :-)

The only things that I really, really miss are:

- Japanes maples - my favourite trees!
- Macrophylla hydrangeas - yes, all of those big blue blooms.... sigh!

Whenever I look at the photos from my zone 5 yard, I am always amazed by what I used to be able to grow there before... LOL How one does forget so quickly! :-)
