I'm in zone 3b and I lost mine also. I've checked and most mock oranges are not hardy in our zones. Minn. Snowflake is the closest I've found and it is zone 4. I don't know how you'd mulch a shrub to really protect it so I gave up on having one.

I'm really surprised to hear that! I have a mock orange on the north side of my house in dry shade and I do nothing to protect it, and it has been there at least 20 years. Perhaps you are both growing an inappropriately tender cultivar? I wish I knew what mine is but it came with the house so I don't. I have heard that they can take a while to start flowering, even if they are doing well, and they do require pruning so they don't get leggy. Mine flowers heavily and smells great. Prone to aphids though.

I have one, but I too don't know the cultivar's name, perhaps 'Blizzard' since its the hardiest variety developed in Alberta.

I've had it for about 6 years, but my bush usually gets hit with a hard frost that kills the flowerbuds just before it has a chance to bloom. BUT, this year I'm hoping it will bloom since its been such an awesome Spring, as well, I noticed that it had no winterkill branches to prune back.

I have a great mock orange on the north side of my house too. I never winter protect it. But I agree it does need a lot of pruning and the aphids are a pain. i don't see any flower buds on mine yet, but I have noticed it doesn't bloom every year. Does anyone have flower buds on theirs yet

My Mock Oranges are Minnesota Snowflake. When I bought them I was told they would be OK in zone 3a. They're in a sheltered site between two houses and get several hours of afternoon sun.

I've seen many of them around town amd I give them more time. I love the fragrance so much.

I planted Minn. Snowflake a couple of years ago. It is doing well, so far no winter kill on the branches either year. Hopefully this year I might get some flowers. Oh, mine is planted next to the house facing south.

I just looked and mine has tiny green flower buds on already. It also has aphids. LOL. According to my not-very-well-kept records, it bloomed in mid to late-June last year. Not sure how that works. But spring has been early this year.

Planted my Mock Orange last year fall, and it seems to be coming up nicely. I found a very happy spot in my back yard, even the impatients are coming back.

We moved into our house last July and by fall had identified the 50 feet of really tall bushes on the W side of our garage as mock orange. The previous owners never pruned them, so no blooms but I did a severe pruning early this spring of the oldest canes. The existing canes still are leafing out only on growth over 8ft. high. Should I just cut them all back to the ground- are they hardy enough for that?

And I'm in Bear Lake. A few Mock Oranges are supposed to grow here as long as they are well protected, but I haven't tried any. Do they bloom later than lilacs?

I haven't had mine bloom yet, but from what I've read I think it's end of June-August depending on your zone. That sound right?
Do they bloom on old wood or new growth?

I can't wait to get to smell these flowers- if all 50 feet of mine start to bloom again the whole neighborhood will smell great!

They bloom on old wood. I'm sure mine blooms before the end of June, it has buds on it right now.
