Dunno - same thing happened to me. :(

Mine is just barely starting and it's planted in a warm spot on the south side of the greenhouse. They're a little pokey, so don't give up hope.

Well darn, I just bought one thinking it would be hardy for me. Are you saying I was wrong? Were these all first year plantings?

I winter sowed it both times. The first time, i had one plant that died off before the summer was over, and the second time i don't think the seeds even germinated. It seems to be one of those things i'd like to have but am destined not to.

I had such bad luck starting baptisia from seed, that I finally gave up.

I did get one seedling out of an entire sown tray in 2006 which it did make it through that first winter. However, its not up yet this spring.

Last year I decided that I would just go ahead and buy the plant when I found them at a local nursery last summer. The two I bought were mature enough to flower that same season and they are now just coming up this last week.

I wouldn't give up on your seedling, but if you want to see blooms, you probably should just go ahead and buy the plant. It takes 5 years for this plant to mature from seed. Quite a long wait for a bloom if you ask me!

Mine are also seed grown, about 4 years old now, I think, but yeah, they're quite slow growing. I don't think hardiness is an issue, just that they are later to pop out of the ground. My hostas in shade are like that, too, take forever to start.

Alright, guess I just need to learn some patience! Alot of my perenniels are just showing some signs of life with the rain we had here the last day or so. It's amazing what a little of nature's moisture can do! Here's hoping the baptisia will show some signs of life soon; I love that it is a prairie native plant and hope it will be successful. My one-season Baptisia plant (bought tiny via mail order) has been just barely poking out of the ground for about 2 weeks now. Slowest darn spring! Frost 2 days in a row this week. I saw nice size baptisia plants in Superior WI last summer.
