Thank you for sharing your photo. I love wandering through out of the way places and coming across a lone or maybe abandoned fig tree.

I remember this enormous fig tree that we saw while rafting on the Stanislaus River in the California Sierras. This was about 1980, before the river valley was to be flooded by a dam. This fig tree covered an entire sand bar (it had spread from branches that had bent to the ground and rooted). We stopped and explored the fig tree, and I felt sad that it was soon to be covered with water. This tree had enormous leaves (but not much fruit), and some of my friends just had to see how much a fig leaf could really cover.

As it turns out, a friend of a friend took many cuttings from this tree right before they filled the dam. I'm told that he started an orchard near Columbia, CA with these cuttings. I've always meant to go see the children of this great tree...

Thank you for your very nice comment.

Xon,
If you have the opportunity, you may want to watch to see the quality of this tree. Growing well in the mountains as it does, it may do well for those gardeners in colder climates, or provide an early ripening fig that extends the harvest season.
