I'm not sure about #1, perhaps some kind of Currant (Ribes).

#2, I believe is a Manitoba Maple ;)

#2 is a Manitoba Maple in its second year probably.
#1 is a shrub or tree by the looks of its thick stem which is not at all like the typical clematis vine.

I think #1 is either a currant or a wild raspberry. We have wild raspberries down by the river and birds leave seeds everywhere! If you have any growing nearby, that's probably what it is. #2 is definitely a Manitoba maple. Marg

I don't think #1 is raspberry - i have lots of those that turn up in places. It could be currant or gooseberry, though. We have both of those growing wild at the lake, so they may have come back with us.

Ah! Manitoba maple! I'll have to dig it out and put it somewhere that it can grow. I know people don't like them, but i really want a tree that isn't poplar or jackpine or cedar! That's why i was all excited about the elm seedling, and then my son's dog ripped it out of the ground.

Don't plant the maple by any garden or flower beds. Or you'll be sorry. They self seed like nuts.

On the other hand, if you get them young, Manitoba maples are easy to pull out. I'll take them over dandelions and thistles any day.

I get poplar seedlings in everything. They're easy to pull out when young too. But if you miss one, even your strong son can't pull them out!
