What to do with soil that is rocky? I just moved to a new location just outside of anchorage and the soil seems to be a mixture of dirt and rocks-some the size of my fist. How do i prepare this for a garden? When i tried raking it, seems like i was pushing rocks around.

How about growing rock garden plants and or alpines?

Our area is famous for the poor dirt...very rocky. My in-laws have been on their property for 25 years and only now have stopped picking rocks. Any avid gardners in this area just have to bite the bullet and bring in topsoil. We have tried planting in the other stuff only to see plants die a slow death. Is your soil sandy or clay?
