First ripe fig

Here is my first ripe fig of the year (a Lyndhurst White breba)(thanks again Keith!). I ate it yesterday. I also took pictures of the inside of the fig, but when I downloaded the pictures from the camera the pictures of the inside of the fig had vanished. Another (even larger) fig will be ready to pick today or tomorrow. I'll post better pix of the inside of it. The taste was just OK - but it sure was nice to be eating a fresh fig again! :)

Here is the tree with brebas and main crop figs:

Here is a cluster of Smith main crop figs that are earlier than most others:

Here is a young LSU Gold tree with quite a few figs. I airlayered this one from my larger tree less than a year ago:

Wow, they look great! How big are those pots your figs are planted in? I recently heard that figs like having cramped roots, so you should keep them in small pots. Even if you plant them in the ground, you should pot them first. Have you heard anything about this? Thanks!

P.S. I'm jealous, I can't wait to sink my teeth into a nice fresh fig :-)

The Lyndhurst White is in a 12-14 gal. pot. The LSU Gold is in a 5 gal. pot.

I've not heard that about figs liking cramped roots. When my potted figs "outgrow" (roots get dense and start "circling" the pot) the pots I have them in I move up to a larger pot. However, this year I did do some root pruning with some 5 gal. trees and repotted them back into 5 gal. pots.

It's getting to be that time of year again! Yesterday, we had our first figs of the year to sample: a Desert King, a Celeste and a Kadota. The Celeste was the best, (it lived up to its nickname the "Sugar Fig"), but all were good. If the hot,dry weather continues in Austin, it should be a great year for figs!

A few more days & I shall get to sample my first fig of the year. My Negronne is swelling beautifully. The first ripe one goes to the chief financial controller of the house.

    piranha,

I was mistaken about the size of the pot the young LSU Gold plant is in. It is actually bigger...maybe 8 gal. or so.

Today I ate brebas from 3 diff. varieties, and they were much better than the first fig I ate (including a second fig from the same tree that I left on the tree to ripen more). Game on! :)

WOW am I envious! Here in Pittsburgh I won't have ripe figs until late summer if I'm lucky! I'm not sure of the variety - maybe a 'common fig'. This is all new for me.

Eastern North Carolina - I purchased a little potted fig in early spring, was sure it wouldn't make it and now it's growing like a house afire and has about 15 quarter sized figs. It was labeled (Chicago) fig. Anybody else try this variety and what were your results?

Yes ,I have it ,full name Chicago Hardy, and is purple black with strawberry interior, when ripe, and is very hardy and easy to grow.
    Figs are high quality taste.

My wife had her second round of fresh figs(Negronne) for the year. MMnnn soooo good she says. So tonight I get to have "Pork Chop" for dinner, otherwise its quaker oats. Pays to have a delightful hobby. Thanks to all fig friends for sharing their experiences & knowledge.
