I tried to grow blue flax one year in my landscaped flowerbed. The original plant came back the next year and that was it. It probably tried to reseed... but, I have mulch on my flowerbeds and therefore it could not reseed. I also love the flowers and one of my neighbors has a huge patch of it that reseeds and boy, does that look great!

Thanks for the ID everyone. Your right about it being a robust reseeder. But its not too difficult to keep in check...unlike the feverfew I planted a couple of years ago. Now that stuff is tough to keep up with.

I'm going for the cottage look so I don't mind the reseeding and everything is planted pretty close (no weeding :-) and its basically survival of the fittest out there--- which it seems feverfew and silene ameria are winning the competition against the flax this year! Ripped out a bunch of feverfew today. . .again!

I also love this in my flowerbeds. To prevent rampant reseeding I cut them back just as they're finishing flowering. I then hang the stems to dry - the foliage dries off leaving just the little balls quite firmly attached. I really like using them in dried arrangements.

Brenda, my blue flax did the same thing as yours and never reseeded...or they never found disturbed ground maybe. My neighbor grows it like crazy. I keep trying though, and this year I scattered seed in a spot I'm trying to make into a meadow type flower bed.

Has anyone tried the Scarlet Flax yet? I planted some last year (seed from William Dam)and it is beeeeeautiful! Needs lots of sun. Planted them again this year.

I've been growing Scarlet Flax for a few years now, and they are pretty! They're annuals, but they do reseed.
