Neil, rhubarb usually likes as much sun as you can give it. Throw in some compost in the planting hole and keep it well watered this year, and you'll have a happy plant for many years!

I put in rhubarb 2 years running. The one that lived is in full sun in the middle of a 1 yo lasagna bed- a flower bed out front no less. I think rhubarb is pretty- as well as yummy!

Rhubarb is almost indestructable in Calgary so growing it is not the issue but what's important is the purpose of planting. If it's for eating then thin it out in early spring and keep only part of the root.

I find rhubarb does really well if planted in a black tub (the type trees come in). The tub is easier to fill with compost,etc. and many more tender shoots grow than if the rhubarb is planted into the ground.

Note: you can get an almost unlimited number of all sizes of pots, tubs, etc. for free at Green Acres in south Calgary. They have a recycle bin and people drop off all manner of pots from plastic to terra cotta to wicker, etc.
