rain and more rain

Woke up to 4.5 inches of rain this morning and still coming down hard, water every where. I had gone and bought a couple more roses for loses last year thinking that they would get watered in well, ohhh ya.

The ground here yesterday was already saturated enough that when I pulled dandelions they all had 6 inch roots still attached. That doesn't happen very often with our rock hard soil.

The rain is coming down and there's no sign of it letting up any time soon :(

We had two solid weeks of rain here - had the sump pump out to drain some of the water from the low areas since the heavy clay doesn't drain well. The mosquito population is nuts this year.

It's only been the past few days that we've had any sun. Some plants are loving it and others are well behind.
I did get my garden in later than usual but they are still behind. There are areas in my yard that smell kind of "swampy".

We haven't had the huge amounts of rain but it has been little here, little there for weeks on end. The sun is out right now for the second time in which feels like months by both me and my plants.

After today things are "supposed" to shape up.....

Wow, that's a lot rain! At my location just NW of Edmonton, it's dry and the garden has been wilting. Early this morning, we received our first bit of moisture in about two weeks and that amount was 1/4 inch. We often have somewhat different weather than Edmonton, the other day the big city sat at 17 c with showers, while here it was 24 c and sunny, I guess that the hills here must make a bit of difference with storm patterns. Though, that's not saying that we can't get dumped on big time, in July 2012, we got 5 inches of rain in 24 hours, I've never seen so much rain come down so fast!

We've had a lot too but luckily we haven't had as much as we might have from thunderstorms this weekend. There are 3 more days of rain forecast but it'll be at the mercy of what hits us and what misses.

My vegetable gardens are raised and my yard is well drained, and I'm trying to fill a pool from the downspout (LOL) so I don't care if it rains too much. I feel bad for the farmers though.

This is certainly not the best year for the yard, is it!? First we had a tough, long winter, then spring was late and cool, and now we have pouring rain! Sigh...

I just hope that none of us will have any flooding in our areas!

Yeah, we've had oodles of rain and not all that much heat. It seems we barely have 2 days of no rain before it starts again. I lost 4 peonies that I had planted last fall because our soil is so unusually soggy. Some of my plants are starting to show strain from our heavy soil + non-stop water(yellowing leaves, etc.). My garden is all up, but it just is not growing very much(except the lettuce), I think it has been too cool and not enough sun. Luckily our farm land is quite high and hilly, so although a couple low spots are a bit drowned, much of it is fine. Though the canola is taking its sweet time getting bigger..sun where are you?!

And of course the mosquitoes are totally cashing in. It is a decent year so far for the couple trees I planted, though.

Though we weren't included in the actual heavy rainfall warning Environment Canada issued for MB, we got a deluge of over 2" in a short time that had my whole yard under water. My sump pumps were running nonstop. Thankfully, though still cloudy and looking threatening, the rain stopped. I hope we're done with it.
    It was scary.

67mm since 11pm last night and that is on top of the 135mm we've had in the last 10 days. The community garden is under water...again. I don't think the potatoes will survive a second drowning.

Power just came back on, good that it did, has started to rain again on top of the now 5.5 inches since around noon yesterday. There is water coming from everywhere in the area through the system of creeks, St. Lazare must have a huge amount of water going through town.

The hostas seem to be loving this weather, and a few plants are blooming a bit longer due to not getting fried by the blazing sun.

I wonder if I should be spraying fungicide as preventative measure on my tomato plants?

Not much moisture in southeast Edmonton. The grass was starting to turn distinctly brown in the dry areas of our yard, and I was seriously thinking of a major garden-watering. Got 10 mm of rain on Sunday... that's a start, but another 20 mm in the next day or two would be fantastic...

Supposedly, for us at least, today is the last rainy day for this week. Pretty hot temperatures the rest of the week - I'm sure the humidity will be through the roof. I hope the rest of you drowned out folks will get the heat and sun as well!

How are you coping, Wayne? I can't imagine 5 inches of rain. This must be devastating for lots of people. I know my town's sewer system wouldn't be able to handle it.

North53, My place is ok but lots of flooded basements and washed out highways and roads in the South/East Sask. and South/West Manitoba area. Winnipeg is going to receive a lot of water in a week or so. Some places had 8 inches of rain apparently, it is going to take quite awhile to repair all the damage and the river hasn't crested yet.

So sorry to hear about all of the problems that you guys are having! Those of us in Calgary and Southern Alberta still remember the dreaded flood that we had in 2013 very well, so I can understand what you are experiencing. I hope that the water problems will go away soon! Take care.

Well Wayne, you were right. Mb has just declared a state of emergency. I sympathize with everyone who's being affected by this extreme weather event.
Is this what we have to look forward to now? I used to love a nice rain, now, every time I see 'heavy' rain in the forecast I worry.

The river still hasn't crested here yet and there are many roads and dams that are holding back water, some have been letting go. We may have peak flow tomorrow if there are no major breaks, Brandon news is saying that they should peak tomorrow, I don't think that's possible.

Oy...so many highways and roads are closed in Saskatchewan right now, it is impossible to get anywhere! The rain has stopped the last couple days and it has been very hot and windy, but unfortunately so much damage is already done and there are many roads that have sections completely washed out. I imagine some of them won't be opening for awhile yet. I hope everyone is safe. It is a little worrisome for some areas lack of access to hospitals, with so many 2, 3 and 4 hour detours to get to major centers. Sigh.

Since I last commented on this we did end up getting 10" of rain over the two week period. Things are soggy and hot now, but the worst part was a windstorm we also had that downed a lot of trees and cut power to a lot of sump pumps. No problems at my house except some flattened irises, but I did end up filling that pool. And the mosquitoes are SERIOUS now. No more weeding until further notice. :(

Yes I would have to agree, I have donated a fair bit of blood so far this season. I have come to appreciate the ones that take my blood and I only notice when they pull out and leave.

Does DEET work for you guys? It works reasonably well on me, but it has no effect in repelling the bloodsuckers from my wife.

DEET works fine on me but it makes me feel sort of weird/sick sometimes. :P Usually I try to wear long clothes and spray it on the clothes. Not when it's this hot though!

OMG, I can't imagine. I got bit 4 times tonight tending my beds for an hour. To me that is lots.

    SCG

Hah! I'd get bitten 444 times in an hour. Or more.
