Fig leaf mosaic poll

I'd like to know who, out there, has a mission or brown turkey tree without even the smallest sign of FLM? FF

Now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing any signs of FMV on my BT. The UCD Mission hasn't had a "healthy" leaf, yet. I'll let you know when I get back to my trees.

I have an off-site BM that had no signs for several years, but started having them last year. Fruit was not different, however, and I still had to prune 8-9 feet off of the top this Spring.

I also have trees from Home Depot, Belleclare, and other nurseries which have symptoms from the first leaf. I know Paradise did not have infected material, though they had received infected wood on more than one occasion, only because they trashed a lot of plants that were infected.

I think my clean BM came from One Green World, but it was many years ago when they had a different name.

My Adriatic tree showed marked signs of FMV for the first time this year. However, the tree appears extremely vigorous and is loaded with thousands of figs. Perhaps the unusually cool, wet spring contributed to the expression of the virus this year. I have never seen a Mission (Francisciana) tree without widespread signs of FMV, but it doesn't seem to significantly affect the growth or production of the tree. Most of the Davis trees, including Condit's hybrids, show more signs of FMV than many of my other fig trees. Conadria, which I ordered from Paradise Nursery, did not show signs of FMV the first year, but now shows signs. Perhaps it acquired it from the other trees. My Celeste and Kadota (Dotatto) do not show significant signs of FMV, but that may be due to the fact that they are well established with better root systems.

Almos all of my black figs (BT, Mission, un-id's) have at least a few spots of FMV. My Celestes (about 15 that I rooted from a tree on the Texas coast last year) have no sign of FMV. Of my 100+ white figs of various varieties( all un-id'd types) Most do not show signs of the mosaic. Mostly, it's the dark figs, with the exception of my Adriatics, which do show signs. My osbourne sorta-look-alike (my Delta Golds) have a few spots, also. Overall, the plants look great. It is just that alot of leaves have a mosaic appearance. I keep my trees spaced to where the leaves never touch each other. I have way over 500 trees now, between 2 and 4 growing seasons old. I quess that it is inevitable that FMV is going to jump to where ever it can. It must not be too detremental to the trees because I have several very young trees ( 2nd season) with small figs on them. I have a theory that maybe the dark green chlorophyll fades off the leaf in the hot sun and the lighter yellow takes over a leaf due to the fact that the darker the leaf the hotter it gets due to sun ray absorbsion. It gets hotter than blazes up here in Northern California. Maybe the leaves shed the darker chloropyll so the leaves stay cooler. Just a theory. Is this a big headache for nurseries or do they just tell their customers that the tree has FMV and that is that?? I mean, is there such a thing of a California fig tree nursery that does not have half of their trees spotted with FMV??? It seems to me that if you grow fig trees in quantity, you just have to live with it. What do you think, Diego?

It is not everywhere, but judging by the trees I have purchased, it is a lot more prevalent than anyone admits. You just have to live with it, esp. if you are going to collect fig varieties, or have more than a couple trees. When I begin selling trees later this summer, they will all have been exposed, but 99% of the varieties that I will be able to make available already had it, or are not available anywhere else, so the choice will be FMV or no tree.

That is my take on the subject, also. What else can you do? I just needed to hear it from some one else in the same boat as I am. Thanks for the response. FF
