Not really. Figs in the wild grow on ancient ruins and then ruins them. I saw a fig growing through a crack in the asphalt one day. The asphalt is cracked by the fig's roots. I live in Canada this happens. You live in Florida so the roots will be more aggressive.

That said, what would be a safe distance? I have figs about 10 feet from a patio and would like to put some 8 feet from a building.

The smaller varieties of edible figs can be planted pretty close to structures. If you intend to grow a 50' behemoth, you might need to plant it well away from the house or patio. I have 'Black Jack' and 'Violette de Bordeaux' planted pretty close to a south facing wall and I'm not the least bit worried about it.
