brown turkey figs

I have 2 brown turkey fig plants in my yard. I love the fresh fruit, however They always die back in the winter and then come back. But by the time he fruit almost ripens it gets cold, and I am lucky to get 3 or 4 fresh figs. I have tried to cover them up with sleeping bags and cover them with mulch, however they still do not make it thru the winter. Some people here in St.Louiscut cut the roots in half and then bury them. and that seems to work. I thought of putting a greenhouse over them, but that is expensive.Does anyone have some suggestions on this matter. Thank You
