Any of these above are fairly big (wide) roses, so do realize that you are probably blocking the view from the window (and possibly easy access to it). Or is that the intent, for security reasons, planting a big thorny shrub?

I want to block the basement window for added security. It is a west facing window and an exposed site so I am looking for something hardy. If I plant a large rose I'm not convinced it will reach full height.

The worst one I have for thorns would be Meidland Turbo, this thing is pure nasty and you would have to be insane to attempt to crawl through it to gain access to the window.

It used to be hard to find but I was amazed to see it at Walmart this year. As an added bonus it blooms very well and cycles very quickly.

I've got a nasty unknown rose at home. It's tough, suckers enthusiastically, and has wide, flat thorns that grow up to 1" long. If you were close, you could come pick up a chunk, but it's not the most beautiful rose in the world. It has white single flowers in early summer, with occasional blooms after, and elongated pear-shaped red hips. I use it for hedges and windbreaks - it forms quite a thicket, and can get up to 6 feet tall, so I usually keep it trimmed shorter. I have absolutely no clue what it is - it was growing at my parents' farm when we moved there 40 years ago.

I get about 3-5 hours of intense hot afternoon sun.

These are from Lois Hole's rose book. They are both hardy.
