We have been eating onions for a while and today was the first lettuce. Yummmmmmmmm! Can't wait for the peas to be ready...but that will be a while yet.

My first (and only) seeding of peas got squished by a dog that shall remain nameless... and i never got any more in the ground. There are times when procrastination doesn't pay off!

Glad to hear that the veggies are growing better for you Marcia. We've been eating spinach for awhile and have just started on the lettuce in the last week. We also won't have much for peas, as very few germinated. Grrrrr.........I suspect that the seed I got had been repackaged from what didn't sell last year. Same goes for the corn, only about 10% germination. I guess that's why some seed can be sold for so cheap :(

Way to grow Marcia! I'm really happy with my garden in its new raised beds too! I have baby zucchini forming, been eating peas, onions and lettuce, and my taters are a couple of feet high and flowering.

Fresh vegetables are wonderful! And it's nice to have them from your own garden, right Marcia?

Spinach self seeded last year so we have been using it for a while. The beet tops can be used already. Carrots are a few weeks yet. The first picking of peas will be today or tomorrow. Pumpkins and cucumbers are up and the beans will be a few weeks yet.

But...I have picked 59 ice cream pails of strawberries from my patch already and I am not nearly done yet. I need to go out now and pick a few more pails for someone who is coming out later to pick them up. I didn't realize the number of people who want strawberries and how much they would like mine. They are Maxim strawberries and are very tasty. Maybe one of these days I will put some away for me too.

Laurie, the zucchini seed I planted (new at Lindenberg's this year) did not germinate. Do you have zucchini? If so...want to trade for some corn? My mom bought 3 different kinds from Stokes, an early, mid and late season, and did an exchange with me... I think everyone of them germinated...want to come and do some transplanting from my garden to yours? I even have some corn seed left...do you want it?

Brenda, my mom and I split a pack of zucchini seeds from the same place. She's also complaining that very few germinated. I had 1 out of 5 germinate, so we'll see how that one produces. See, last year I ordered corn from Stokes too and I had tons of corn. I never did put in an order to Stokes this spring and am now kicking myself!
I wonder if there's still time to sow corn seed and have it produce? I may just take you up on that transplanting offer! ;)

We finally got everything watered this evening (there was something broken on the 250-gallon tank we fill from the pond). Things should start perking up even more now. I was going to take a picture this evening after it was watered, but part of the hose was leaking and i was a little watered too! :)

Gil, we have one raised bed and this year i've put asparagus in it. My sister-in-law told me that tomatoes grow well with asparagus, so some of the tomatoes went in there too. The plants are nice and big and flowering, but no babies yet. And no baby zukes either - i made sure i checked just to let you know!

Marcia, congrats on your veggie garden rebirth! Just today, I noticed 2 baby zucchinis... they are so cute! And yesterday I had a salad from my lettuce. I am still debating whether I want to pick a few leaves here and there or harvest and re-seed.

Seeing as everyone is so happy with their raised beds for veggies, I may have to put a couple in next year. One more project added to the list ;^)

Kim, I planted mixed lettuce this year and it's awesome! When it was very young I was stealing one leaf from each lettuce, but now that they're big and starting to crowd each other I am harvesting to thin them out.

Laurie, I do love my raised beds but you have to water a little more and use mulch.

My veggie garden is so-so this year. I lost two tomatoes - Brandywine - and a third isn't looking so good. They just shrivelled up and died.

But, my peas, beets (white), chard, carrots and parsnips are all doing fine. The asparagus was wonderful for its very first harvest. I have one end of my garden that is low and I have been unable to plant because it just wouldn't dry up. It's dry now. I wanted to do onions but I'm wondering if I still have time and if it will stay dry enough so that they don't rot. I had corn there last year and got beautiful plants but no corn. Tomatoes didn't do well there the year before. I think we will be raising it all up this year so that it is all level. That will be our fall project.
