Help! Large fig tree has collapsed in two

Recently after a storm, we discovered our fig tree had fallen and split in three sections at the base. It is in full bloom and is very large (almost as tall as our house). This year we noticed a couple fo main branches that were no longer getting leaves. We had yet to cut these out. Right where these branches were in the center is where our tree split. Because the rot(?) Was at the center of the tree and all of the large branches are at this point falling to the ground, I assume we need to cut the whole tree down. I would like to save the tree. What should we do? Cut all the main branches, leaving the very small brand new shoots? Is the tree even salvageable? How do we prevent whatever caused this from taking the whole tree?
