I am in the process of a major revamping of the perennial garden and best be keeping my hands in my pockets when it comes to fall purchases! Best be placing the plants I have before adding more! I do know the new plans will featuring more lilies. So where I will be spending my winter hours when it comes to the choosing ...where else but here on the Far North Gardening Forum!

The only white I have is Iceberg, good strong grower but it does have a slight hint of lime green in the throat.

Shelley, although I don't see it listed at the VK website they do have LA Barbizon in their 2006 catalogue, large, upfacing icy-white, pristine blooms. Sales rep from Holland informs that this is the best pristine white in the LA's to date.

Maybe THe Lily Nook sells it?

There are some beautiful white lilies out there. Probably the cleanest white ones that I have are New Wave and Navonna. But I will post others I have that are white also.

Shelley, you did not mention how tall of a lily you were looking for.

I have Iceberg already and mine was a bit on the cream side. I want white-white.
I have never ordered lilies from Valley K , but I have ordered roses the last two years and have been very pleased.
Height doesn't matter when it comes to lilies Brenda, I have lots of room everywhere in my lily bed. I still haven't put a ground border in so it can and will expand. I live in a small town, but have 3 large lots. I see more beds happening in the near future now that I done a lasagne bed and seen how well it works. Time, is the issue more than anything. Which is true for almost all of us.
Marcia, I'd be interest in the Snowbrook. I have a pretty pink lily that needs to be divided that has very thick flower petals like Tino's. I don't know the name but it's been very vigorous. It was my only survivor from a bag of 25 bulbs from Brecks about 4 years ago. They sent me this bag in November and the ground was already frozen when I planted. I was ticked and haven't ordered from them since. I have posted a picture of it in the gallery under lilies. It was the July 18 posting. The second unknown pink. The fifth picture I believe. Send me an email if you'd like to do a trade.

Shelley, because I have about 200 or so kinds of lilies the ones I like to get now I want to have their name. I know I am being picky but...

If you want a short white plant for the front of the bed New Wave lily would be ideal because it only gets about 15" high.

I know that you are doing a lily bed but...I have some short white irises also.

I'm on a lily-track now. I inherited some very nice totally unknown lilies when I moved here & would like to add some variety. I've checked Valley K, Lily Nook etc etc & find mostly early & mid bloomers or sites that don't mention bloom time.
Anyone know of available, late (August) blooming pink, white, pale yellow up or side facing ones? Less expensive varieties preferred as I know nothing about them & would like to learn without bankruptcy.

Laurie, the lilies that bloom in August are mainly the Orientals and Orienpets. Asiatics are pretty much done blooming by mid August. In our zone, Orientals should be planted in a warm, sheltered spot, like the south side of a building. I've found that Orienpet 'Boogie Woogie'(side facing and pale yellow) is quite hardy, as I've had it for 3 winters now, and it's increased quite well. I've now added a couple more Orienpets and am hoping that they'll also be as hardy. The problem with them, is that they can be a bit pricey. Sometimes over $10 a bulb, so it's good to watch for deals on those. It's also better to plant these in the spring so that they have all summer to get established.

for me since I'm not a member, that orientals, yes, spring is best but for orienpets, unless they come from a very warm climate, they are best planted in the fall. That's why we at the Manitoba Regional Lily Society do
not sell orientals at our fall bulb sales but do sell orienpets! I think this is important information and should be shared with your group.

Update to my Lily Nook problem. I got a credit for the 'Bright Star' that was the wrong colour. And 'Red Dutch', which did not sprout at all, when I dug up the flower bed there the bulb was down there having a nap just like I thought. Looks healthy, I guess I will just take it with me and hope it snaps out if it next spring.

I really hope that Red Dutch wakes up next spring for you. It's a real stunner.

Ah, so that's what you were up to for the past few days. You were on an ordering frenzy!LOL
Well, ya know, if you start to feel over-whelmed with all that fall planting, you could always send a few bulbs to the east. ;^)

Yeah, that's the down side to gardening...........the cost! :(
I went WAY over budget this summer, so my fall planting will be minimal. But that's ok, because the more I plant this fall, the more watering I'd have to do, and frankly, I'm just sick of watering by hand already. Actually, around noon today, we have a guy coming to give us an estimate on a dugout. The thought of just having to go turn on a sprinkler to water the gardens has me giddy with anticipation!!

Sharon - I want to order Honey Queen too but can't seem to find it on the ValleyK website. Can you steer me in the right direction? Maybe they are sold out... :(

Laurie, how do you water? What about household water, where do you get that from? ThatÂs the joy of having a water well, I can put the water on for hours and not have to pay for the water, however we do still have to pay for the electricity for it to pump out.

Sharon, you're so lucky to have unlimited water! We have to haul water in for the house. There's water tanks in our basement for that. For the yard, I collect rain water and use those 1 gallon watering cans to hand water everything. When the rain barrels are dry(which happened a lot this summer!) DH will get a load of water from a nearby slough(small lake, for those of you who aren't from the prairies) and fill the rain barrels and pump the remaining water onto a flower bed. He's hauled so many truck loads of water this year for the yard, that it's just crazy already. Lots of extra wear and tear on the truck, not to mention how time consuming this all is. So I think a dugout will be well worth the money. There a very few "good" water wells in this immediate area. Believe me, if there was even a remote chance of getting decent water without the chance of the well drying up in a couple of years, we'd drill one. But there have just been too many unhappy endings around here concerning wells.

But, on the bright side, the way our luck works, if we get a dugout, guaranteed we'll have normal or above normal precipation for the next few years, and we won't have to rely on the dugout at all. That's what happened when we installed air conditioning in the house..........didn't need it for the next 2 summers ;^)

Laurie, what kind of rain barrels do you have? We bought a plastic one this spring and it has a small hose on the bottom for filling watering cans. It just occurred to me that i could probably attach a longer hose and drag it around to most of the containers. Actually, that rain barrel has been a wonderful addition to the yard and made life a lot easier for me this summer. It's dry again now too, so i'm hoping to fill it with pond water maybe tomorrow evening - dh has a 250 gallon tank filled with water pumped up from the beaver pond. We've gone through so many tanks this summer that it's a wonder there's still water in the pond!

Marcia, our barrels are just some regular ones that were picked up from a local manufacturing plant and washed out. I've often thought that a faucet could be installed at the bottom of them rather than having to dip and fill the watering can from the top. But of course, the person who has the know how on how to do this, doesn't have to do the watering. So of course that job is not on the top of his priority list ;^)

I do have a 300 gallon tank that gets filled each spring from run off water. This one does have a faucet and hose at the bottom, but it's by the veggie garden. We've never had to re-fill this one during the summer, except for this year. This one's much easier on the back!

You're lucky to have a beaver pond close by. How handy is that! Kind of in the middle of our shelterbelt, we have a low spot that collects the spring run off. Typically we have water in here till the end of June, sometimes into July. So we're thinking if the dugout is placed there, then hopefully that water will last until the end of summer. That's the theory anyway!

Laurie, i feel for you! Watering everything with watering cans isn't my idea of fun at all!

We have a pump attached to the 250-gal. tank. You can attach the hoses right to the pump. Usually we have two sprinklers going at a time on the vegetable gardens and i drag a third hose around to water the flower beds. I often wish that i could just turn on a tap to water, but this is a lot better than doing it by hand!

From lilies to watering. It is funny how conversations go. I'm hoping you get your dugout Laurie. Watering by hand is way to much work.

I just got my order from SW Gardens today. I was very pleased with the order. The bulbs were not huge, but a nice size. As a bonus, I had ordered 1 Kaleidoscope, but they sent 3 plus a baby one. Not bad considering they were charging $8 for each of Kaleidoscopes bulbs.
