Frost protection

Today's cool weather got me thinking about a possible freeze in January and February. I seem to remember that last year, someone posted a suggestion for using a painter's drop cloth to protect the plants but I haven't been able to find the post. Does anyone remember the suggestion?

I don't remember the exact post, but I save old bedspreads, sheets, blankets etc. Anything that will provide protection EXCEPT plastic. I use clothes pins to hold things on.

The reason for asking about the drop cloth is that it would be lightweight and easy to store.I think the post said that it was plastic on one side and flannel on the other which describes a tablecoth. I saw a drop cloth at HD which was paper with some backing but it didn't look as if it would provide a lot of protection.
