Fig trees in planters

I'm thinking of putting a couple of fig trees in planters alongside our south-facing brick wall, underneath an overhang but with a/c condensate dripping. I can't plant them in the ground there because we have a French drain and gravel. I've been told at a local nursery that figs don't grow in this area (but I know they do, just sometimes they die back). Gardeners Supply says it might get too hot and the drip might grow fungi. Has anyone tried this? Any chance it would work all right? We've a matching northfacing wall without the overhang or French drain, would that work better? There's also a westfacing brick wall (no overhang, no drain) but snow lingers longest there, partly because of the prevailing winds.

Thanks,
