zinnia problem

Anyone know what would cause a healthy thriving zinnia to suddenly die in one day?

This is the second one to go that way. Looks great one day, totalling wilting and dead the next.

Sounds like either something is chomping on the roots or its accidently getting sprayed with something.

Well I just lost another one in the same area. These zinnias are planted in groups of 3 amongst the perennials in my driveway bed. They were to provide consistent color in that bed.
So now I've lost a whole group. I watched this one more closely. All I can see is the lower stem seems to dry out, then the plant dies. I'm thinking it must be fungal. I'll be sorry if I lose them all. When I pull the plant out, the roots look okay, but the stem is rotten at the bottom. They are planted in well drained soil and it has been fairly hot and dry here, but I do water that bed.
I hope someone can suggest how I can save the rest of them. This clump was in full flower and they were large plants. :(

It sounds almost like damp-off, so it must be fungal. I have no idea what you can do about it though - sorry!
