Depending on where they lived in Alaska, it could very well have been zone 4. Someone from Alaska used to post here once in awhile - can't remember who it was though.

And welcome! As SCG says, we're small but mighty. I think we have one of the most active Canadian forums - i visit Gardening in Canada and Northern Gardening and many of their posts remain unanswered for a long time.

Alaska may be zone 4 or even 5 in some places but their summers are overwhelmingly cooler than ours. The warmest summers - in the Fairbanks area - are comparable to Calgary's but shorter.

Don't kid yourself. Nothing I mean NOTHING is like Calgary.

'Tis true - the summers here are very cool in the evening, making gardening even more challenging. In addition, we have poor snow cover, chinooks etc.... all of these are good for human inhabitants of the city, but they are rough conditions for our poor plants and trees!!! Sigh.....
