A friend of mine has a beautiful immaculate yard ( I wish mine was) which includes quite a few Stella's. She never divides hers. Whether or not they would perform better if she did, I don't know. They sure looked nice when I was there, but they were almost finished blooming, so I'm also not sure how well they bloom.

I'm sure someone else will be able to answer your question better. I'm curious, too, as I've got 15 new daylilies. =:)

My daughter's house came with a fairly large clump of daylilies that had probably been there for years (a nice wine colour, but i don't know their name). They've been beautiful both summers that she's been in the house, so it doesn't seem as if you really need to divide them.

I have had Stella D'oro Lilies for years. Yes they do flower better with division. I divide mine every 3 years. I have one plant that is just about the size of the one you said you want northspruce. It should have really been divided this year but I didn't. There wasn't anywhere near the flowers on it as there was on another plant I have that is half it's size.

If the plant is huge and doesn't bloom, or you only get one or two blooms, it's time to divide.
Next Spring, I'm dreading that chore, I have soooo many to divide ;)

Sounds like this is a time to divide and conquer. I have the same issue with several older plants but it just dawned on me that since I don't have room for more, I could try to give away anything I don't want to plant back in. I grow a number of seedlings and so there there are 2 rows about 10ft. long to spread out plus some in pots and I really don't want more of the older ones for now.

On a second vein, does anyone know the "grouping" or type that extends by suckering. I brought home some plants from doing yard work and now they are spreading so though they look good I am concerned about the spreading.
