Brebas....Ureka!!!

I live in South Central Pa. (York County) and I walked past a huge fig bush one day near where I work. For a week I waited to see if I could catch someone out in the yard to get a few cuttings. Well today a man was pruning the bush and I stopped to talk to him. The fig bush must have 500 figs on it and it had at least 50 breba figs...Wow, and guess what he invited me in to pick as many brebas as I wanted!!! I ate quite a few and got many cuttings. He told me to come back anytime and help myself to the figs and any cuttings I wanted. I took several and rooted them when I got home. I told him that he had made my day. He smiled. :) I did likewise. :)

Mike A thanks for sharing. Maybe you could post a pic of the leaf and a ripe fruit. From what I gather your discovery is in zone 6a or 6b. I would be interested to know if the plant is winter protected or if it is left unprotected in the winter.

    mikeycp,
I know how he felt, it's a good feeling, Now you can do the same for someone later! "What goes around, comes around"

Good luck with your new cuttings.

    Mikecp,
thats great, my neighbor next is 76 years young and he told ,e he loved figs well i figured i give him my brown turkey that i had in a half whiskey barrel and my oldest at the time. he put in shed and it came back but had a lot of cold damage. Sad to say it finally died. Anyways i was lucky and sprooted a stick from my EL sals last year and kept it for 1 year over wintered in my garage. This year i brought out my trees when weather permitted and waited for him to leave his house and i snuck that 2nd season fig tree in his yard right next to my bari italy tree (share chainlink fence). When he next saw me he was just thrilled as one can be that i gave him the tree, well heck i could see how he enjoyed them last year as i had shared mine with him i would just pick em of my trees and yell hey Dennis when he was in his veggie garden and give him a handful. He even eats em like me no wash just right into mouth and throw away the stenm part. So what im trying to say is its a nice thing that you ran into that gentleman and im positive he saw your eyes light up like i saw my neighbors and this is a great thing in my opinon.

    Martin,
When I pick a fig or a bunch of figs, if my wife is with me she will tell to wash them figs that there ain't no telling what had been on them!

I do just like you, Bite into that fig just below the stem, then let that stem fly.

    HEHE, Cecil
