See if you can guess ... ?

Okay, I know this looks a bit weird ... several years ago, I had discovered this unusual growth upon my 'September Ruby' apple tree. I had made four grafts, though only two had grown (back then I had not known about chip budding). Now, see if you can guess as to what has developed of these, it certainly has not been what I had expected and a rather nice surprise at that! No, I didn't get blue apples or something really far out, lol. I'll post the answer in a few weeks time.

Think I have seen this pic before...weren't you hoping for weeping traits? It sure is a weird growth...forking out into 4 branches...I can only see for splitting down the road...don't let
us suffer one one full week!

OK So my guess is that there are two varieties of apples growing on one tree.....and maybe even two different types of leaves......mutant alien tree form! Sounds rather futuristic. :)

Konrad, the growth had indicated that it might produce a tree with an upright columnar habit.

Yea...upright columnar habit,..that's it!
Back to the drawing board, you made graft's of what, onto a September Ruby tree, perhaps mixed up the scion and now you have a surprise fruit....is it still apple or something else?

Perhaps those fingers of a mystery scion grew into a willow basket and now filled with September Ruby apple?

Konrad, several years ago I had come to your orchard and purchased a few apple rootstocks, the above growth had been grafted onto these and has grown as a tree of its own.

"is it still apple or something else?" ... still 100% apple.

You all have a good sense of humor I see :)

Well..in my seedling rootstock there could be many surprises.
I had some nice ornamental pink flowering crab apples, [picture]

one I like to get propagated... but there could be some nice larger eating apple, [open pollinated] if I ever let them grow larger, perhaps yours is one??.. most I cut and the known variety put on. I have one root stock right now which looks good in the foliage and I will top graft this next year onto a older apple tree, this way it will fruit several years earlier to see if it's any good for future use.

I'm open for a surprise.
