Seeking Calla Info

My mom planted a few Calla Lily bulbs this year and they did well.

But what we wanted to know is, how long do they generally bloom and plant last for?

Hers has finished blooming, and now all the leaves are turning yellow (looks like they are dying off for the season)

Now I'm not sure on these and I thought I would come here and seek out some info on what she should do. Should she pull the bulbs/tubers or just leave them be for now? Or in your opinion, do you think the plants might be infected?

I just thought it seemed odd for them to finish up already. Although I'm not sure how long a Calla Lily season generally is.

Any info on these would be great. I told her I would look for info and I thought I'd come to the best resorce :)

Well Nikki, since no one else has answered this, I will try. I am not an expert on callas, by any means.

My guess is that the bulbs are just going dormant. I went and had a look at mine, yesterday....I have one pot of purple and one pot of white. The purple ones are just starting to go dormant...a couple of the leaves have faded to yellow and the rest are just starting to turn. The white ones though have flowered all summer and are still green as can be. The season is winding down though and I am sure that the white ones won't be green for much longer.

I am going to wait till either the frost hits them or they die back a little more.....then I plan to lift them and trim the tops back and store in a brown paper bag, indoors. If the leaves have already faded, I would think you can lift them now.

I second the motion with Sierra. I grow callas but also don't feel as if I am an expert.

I also think her callas are going dormant. Callas will bloom for a month or so. Then the foliage will die down as your mom's is doing. Are hers planted in the ground or in a pot?

I leave my callas in pots all year round. In the fall I let them get a frost to kill the tops, then take them into the greenhouse so they do not freeze anymore, cut off the dead tops and let the pots totally dry out. Once the soil is totally dry then I place the pots in my cold storage room. Next spring I just pull out the pots and water them. Up come the callas again.

I have tried in the past to store the callas, cannas and other bulbs in paper bags and found that they will totally dry out for me and I will lose many of them that way.

I store all my dahlias, callas, cannas, brug, begonias in dry garden dirt in pots and have 100% making it through to next year with plump firm rhizones/bulbs/etc.

Thank you for the replies. I will be sure to pass along the info.

She has her bulbs in a pot and they did indeed bloom for a month or month and a half.

So...just to clarify, she should just leave them be for now until it gets a titch on the cooler side of life, then cut the tops off and let totally dry out? Then store for the winter.

Sounds good to me! I'm sure she'll do that very soon.
