Maybe 'Sutherland Gold'?

I don't think so, it's not yellow. Just fairly dark green.

I would guess 'American Elder' but the leaves seem different. Also when I looked I found several pics of 'Sutherland Gold' that were a lot darker green.

I have 'Sutherland Gold'. The leaves are gold where they're in the sun but green in the shade. And the thing's a tree not a shrub.

Yes! It's in shade and it's up to the eaves. It's probably that. Dang, I really like it but yellow leaves make me cringe.

Totally adds up too, because this friend and I have agreed to disagree about whether yellow foliage is a) awesome, or b) barely tolerable.

I thought we had come to the consensus on this forum that you plant and then shovel prune if you don't like.

So buy one of each and SP the one you don't like. LOL

Here it is!

At the forefront, you have the Sambucus nigra laciniata, which is the dark green one. Even though the lighting condition makes it look a bit darker or even bronze-like in the photo here, it really is a nice dark green.

The golden yellow one is Sambucus racemosa "Morden Golden Glow".

At the far end, you have Sambucus nigra "Black Lace".

Of the three, I love the Black Lace the most, because of the foliage colour and form. The Laciniata is nice too, but not as eye-catching as the Black Lace.

As for the Morden Golden Glow, even though this is an east facing area, it has some leaf burn already - perhaps it needs more water than it gets right now as a younger shrub.
