I've cut it down to about 12 inches and it came back pretty as ever. :o)

I have the red and also a white bloomer .
The white seems more cold sensitive and
has prettier blooms .

I grow a lot of vines, even the ones considered thugs, in south Fl, because I love the colors. Most of them I hard prune once a year, just to keep them in control. Now will this practice take it's toll on the long term life of the plant I don't know, but hard pruning once in a while certainly won't hurt. :o)

I prune my bleeding heart vine several times a year, it doesn't ever seem to be bothered by it, in fact it usually blooms quite nicely after a hard pruning... except for that last time before the freeze, oops, but it's pretty tough, it should live.

I can say pruning by puppy is not good for bleeding heart. Several things in my yard have survived the puppy's assaults on landscaping, but the bleeding heart is suffering.

Anyone know how well they reproduce via cuttings, now that I'm relocating everything pretty and smaller than a hatchback to the front yard?

Natives, nothing will withstand daily assault like from a puppy. lol Have you tried a small fence of some sort. Your baby will soon not be a baby anymore and you can remove the fencing. If you try to root it, get at least 3 leaf nodes in the ground. Also try to get last years growth, not new growth or hard wood. You might be better off trying to get a piece with a root on it. :o)
