Landscaping and New Fence

We've finally managed to build a new wooden fence and I'm thrilled that I can finally landscape that particular area. I'm thinking a tree, shrubs, etc., of course. We all know what the "Etc." is, LOL !

The soil in the area is atrocious so I'll have a lot of work to do. When I amend and build up the soil, how do I keep the soil from the fence so it doesn't rot over time? A row of bricks? Landscape fabric?

Any and all information regarding the pros and cons of anything out there, is welcome =:)
