    Looking wonderful, and very tasty

I love radish. Very popular way to eat it in Russia: sliced, with dill, sliced green onions and a bit of chopped up lettuce - and topped with sour cream. Yummy.

I just want to know what time dinner will be ready. Your photography and food looks wonderful as usual. Yes, I like radish and eat it in many different ways. Thanks for sharing and maybe we should write a radish recipe cookbook. Linda

    Hi Olya

Your way to eat radish sounds delicious! I am going to try that tomorrow. I am also going to pickle some.

And I remember from the last time I was in Prague everybody was making sauerkraut, maybe I will try my hand at making since I have a lot of cabbage.

    Hi Linda

Thank you, I do love radish and I think sometimes the people don't like the spiciness but if they are lightly sauteed in butter they are very mild.

And we should named the new book "crudites".:o)

    Howdy Silvia,

I planted some french breakfast last time I was here in florida - early december - they are immense now but still quite edible. We've been eating them a bunch, with plenty left to go to seed for next time.

Also I have planted my yearly crop of corn and sweet potatoes. This year I planted some pigeon peas that Colombian friends gave us. They are much tastier than other pigeon peas that I have had. It's a bit early for them, but we'll see.

Sorry I never sent you that corn and then I forgot about it. There is some here in Lake county, if you have some reason to travel northwards ya'll can stop by and grab it.

    Hi Pat

It is so nice to hear from you, I did not know where you were. Now I see that you have been busy planting.

What kind of sweet potatoes and corn did you plant? I am trying to grow the same bush sweets that I grew this past season, they were really good and I will save them for the years to come, hopefully.:o)

Don't worry about the corn, remember I told you I have a postage stamp size garden? Some years I will try novelties but that is about it.

And I will take you up on your offer and visit you sometimes when I am in the Lake county area, and when you coming near Orlando I hope that you do the same.

    Hi Tom

Thank you for the radish seeds, I will grow them soon. Also this season I am growing the Italian tomato that you gave me and the melons.

Silvia, that salas looks delicious, and those radishes are all so different! I have to tell you that I see a few more of the watermelon radishes getting fat, and I also see that a few of the icicles are getting thick, so maybe I will have a little luck with radishes after all. If it is not too late, I think I will plant a few more seeds tomorrow, now that I am encouraged!

Yummy looking Silvia. It's getting too late for me to start another round here now so let me know how you do with the Salad Rose. I won't get to try it until next year but you know me, if it looks like a carrot and taste like a radish I'm in seventh heaven :-)

Anna, that mesclun that I planted is very crispy, it goes so well with any dressing and the chopped veggies are the perfect compliment sweet from the carrots and peppers and spicy from the radish.

I hope that you get some nice radish, with the cooler weather that we are having.

Tom, I guess that you can still grow your rat-tail radish and put them in salads.

I went to the oriental store and they had different seeds, this time I got a mini chinese cucumber, if it is good I will send you some seeds.

Sounds neat Silvia. I have not even started cukes or zukes, soon it will be too hot and buggy here but I've got your knee-highs and plenty of BT :-) Still, I just have not made up my mind if I'm going to forgo cucurbits and tomatoes this spring, it's getting so late here....

Tom, I got some tomatoes started that somebody sent me the seeds, they are supposed to be heat tolerant and no they are not the ones like heat master, sun master or the ones that we heard of.

I have plenty of tomato seedlings if you want to pick them up, since most of the varieties are new for me this season, I don't have any familiar, hope they do well to save the seeds for future plantings.

You should be fine with the squash and cucs, I notice there is less bugs since we had the cold weather for so long. If it is still cold you could start them in a pot and transfer them to the garden. Sometimes you have to think like a northener gardener and start seeds inside.

All my seedlings are in the porch and nothing has died yet.:o)

I LOVE RADISHES AND THOSE LOOK YUMMY! SO FAR NOTHING DEAD HERE> DARN COMPUTER HAS CAP LOCKS ON AGAIN> TYRING TO TURN IT OFF, hubby just touched my hair and shocked me, what is going on, power was out for four hours, just us and one neighbor. What a night!

I harvested some radish yesterday. They are grown from seeds I got from Seed Exchange. Not sure what to do with them. Can I put them in a stew or do I slice and fry them? I know it's unusual but I've never cooked radish before. :(
    Advice will be really appreciated.

    Sharon

I hope that your problem is solved, and your computer is working fine. That is scary with no lights that is for sure. Today is a new day, and everything should be better. :)

    Smallfern

That looks like a daikon radish that I grew last year, you can make a salad with sliced carrots, cabbage and put a mild dressing of rice vinegar and some sesame oil.

You can also sliced them and put them in an oriental type soup.

Let us know how you make it.

Here is mine from last season

Your vegetables all look wonderful. One day I will get up the nerve to try vegetables instead of flowers, and with the tips I've been reading here, I don't think it will be too difficult :-)

I just read an interesting tip today about planting icicle radishes in with cucumbers and squash to help keep the bugs off. Has anyone tried this?

    Terri

    Hi Terri

One day you are going to surprise us with the pictures of your harvest.:)

I do try a lot of companion planting that like the same weather and conditions. I did not try the icicle radish and cucumbers, squash combo because radish I grow when it is cool and the other two when is warmer.

Nasturtiums go well with these veggies making sure that you give them enough room.

Last year I had squash with petunias

    Silvia,

That is just beautiful, and even more lovely than a lot of flower beds! I admire all the work and love you all put into your veggie gardens. One day... :-)

olya forgot the obligatory riumochka of vodka that usually follows the bite of radish...

reading this is kinda funny 'cause i was just munching on some radishes wonder WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH ALL THESE RADISHES???? and silvia gave me some ideas. in one of my north african cookbooks, the author mentions that in tunisia they use radishes interchangeably with turnips... now if i can only figure out what to do with all the turnips i have so i can start using my radishes as turnips...

anyway, i planted hybrid radishes for the first time this year and i am totally sold. for a few cents more, no splitting and better flavor.

Thank you Terri, you are very kind and I do hope that you try to grow veggies sometimes.

    Hi Michael

Olya's recipe for radish sounds delicious to me, simple and good!
I am glad that you are enjoying your radishes. Pretty soon the growing will be over till next season.
Try your hand at pickle them, somebody posted this recipe that sounds good.

    Hi,Silvia.
I like radishes but my Sylvia likes them more.
I can eat just some, :-)
I have been harvesting some but they are the size of a nickle. Two days ago,I was by the garden with Jonas,
my 21 month old grandson. I ate a radish fresh out of the garden and let him try it,he eats everything. He ate a piece, made a face and did not want any more. I love those moments.
I can never grow them bigger than a nickle size.
    Yours are so big...
    Hugs,
    Felix

    Good morning Felix,

I am glad that you and Sylvia likes radish. On Jonas, the grandson I can understand that he does not like them now, as children we did not like certain things that now we enjoy. Just keep him in the garden and eventually when he is bigger his taste buds will change.:)

The bigger radish are oriental, when planting them give them enough space to grow, you already have the well amended soil and we still have some cool days to enjoy radish.

    Hugs

Well, you all know how I like my icicles, and seeing this post and the fact that I was getting hungry for a late-afternoon snack I just made a little trip out to the garden :-)

    Tom

Nice icicles Tom! You are eating like in the White House, remember those icicles sauteed with scallops?

I can see Michael with an ice vodka shot and a radish plate and you Tom are having a radish plate with beer, lol

And I can see that you like the orange color too, don't forget to plant those mexican sunflowers, you can plant them in the ground next to the bananas.

I am trying to utilize the space around the bananas and that is where I planted a lot of onions maybe I will add some flowers too.

    Hi, Silvia,

Today is March! I am counting the days when you and Willy will come and visit!

I like radish, but Art (considering that he is half chinese) does not like them. He said he does not like the smell, but I still sneak it in with green salad. The ones I get from the Asian store are called Daikon. Like your white and long ones, I pickle it with rice vinegar, sugar and black pepper. I ate it with broiled fish or pork chops. Yummy.

On another subject, the bananas you gave us are still brown. The French cooking kind is gone. Hopefully the Namwa and Mona Lisa will show some kind of revival soon.

    Hugs,

    Freya

    Hi Freya

It is a nice day today, hopefully spring has arrived! Don't give up on the bananas just yet, they are strong and can come back from the roots. Mine are still brown except the Nam Wa and the polynesian.

Your way to pickle radish sounds very good and easy, I have to try that sometimes. Last year I got some monster daikon, I made one for a party, send one to a chef that lived in Asia and the other I gave it to my neighbor who is chinese, I did not know they don't like radish, lol.

    We will see you soon.

    Hugs

In Miami, once established, bananas will take over and choke out anything around it.
