YouÂll have a better chance of survival if transplanted in the spring, but many northern gardeners still do this task in early fall as well, just make sure you try not to disturb the roots too much, dig a good root ball when digging it up and water good till freeze up, as well mulch for extra protection in case we have a dry, snow-less winter.

I give all my newly planted perennials a good straw cover up during its first winter, regardless if its bulletproof hardy or border line hardy.

Leisuretime, i have one bed similar to yours and have never offered any extra protection to the plants in it. There's been a peony in it for about a dozen years now - no problem! :)

I'll wait until spring, that is when I usually move things around. This is a new garden and I'm a little over eager to make it mine.

Good to know Marcia. I've never had raised beds before and I don't want to lose any of the perennials I've added. I think I will still go ahead and protect my investment ;o) At least this year, I'm zone pushing on a couple of them as it is.
